Review:
I don't care how you pronounce the Belgian city in the title. And I
don't care how many prissy film critics complain that
playwright-turned-filmmaker Martin McDonagh, 37, doesn't yet know
his way around a camera. In Bruges is literate, lively
cinema?a bit of all right in a sea of tongue-tied tinseltown
garbage. Those who know McDonagh's great Irish plays, such as
The Pillowman, The Beauty Queen of Leenane,
The Lieutenant of Inishmore, won't be surprised by his
blend of brutality and humor. The setup is simple: Two Irish
hitmen, the seasoned Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and the caffeinated Ray
(Colin Farrell), have been sent to Bruges by their hotheaded boss
Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to cool off from a job gone wrong in London.
Ken finds the medieval town and its tourists serene. Ray finds it

McDonagh has rendered Bruges as a non-entity. It could be any place in Europe, except that it is Bruges and it sucks there, for reasons we never fully understand. The irony of sinful people walking through a preserved fairytale village may have looked delightful on paper, but it does not translate on-screen since Bruges doesnt come off as a lovely, unspoiled place anyway. Don't know where Bruges is? You're not alone, per the running joke in acclaimed playwright Martin McDonagh's fun and foulmouthed black comedy that will likely put Colin Farrell back in our good graces. Source: Hollywood.com |

"In Bruges" (R, 107 minutes) Two Dublin hit men (Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell) are ordered to hide out in Bruges, Belgium, after a hit goes very wrong. Along the way, there are times of great sadness and poignancy, times of abandon, times of violence, times of goofiness, and that kind of humor that is (ital) really funny (unital) because it grows out of character and close observation. Colin Farrell in particular hasn't been this good in a few films, perhaps because this time he's allowed to relax and be Irish. As for Brendan Gleeson, if you remember him in "The General" you know that nobody can play a more sympathetic bad guy. Written and directed by Martin MDonagh. Rating: Four stars.
