| Akeelah and the Bee |
With emotional gaps being filled and a competition to spur things along, IAkeelah and the BeeI will no doubt be lumped in with all those other feel good movies out there. But IAkeelahI manages more than some cheap emotional manipulations. There is some real substance to the emotion within the film. This is less of a credit to seasoned veterans Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett though, who are content to sit back and play supporting roles to the true talent of the movie. Akeelah (Keke Palmer) is a spelling whiz at her Los Angeles school, but avoids the spelling bee because other students make fun of "brainiacs." Then a professor (Laurence Fishburne) agrees to be her coach, and she begins to move up through the contests. Her mother (Angela Bassett), who thinks homework is more important, doesn't approve. Akeelah's friendships with two fellow contestants, a Mexican-American named Javier (J.R. Villarreal) and an Asian-American named Dylan (Sean Michael Afable), are crucial in the film's outcome. Wise, moving, entertaining. Written and directed by Doug Atchison. Source: RogerEbert Headlines |
| Al Franken: God Spoke |
Maybe you like Al Frankens politics, maybe you dont. Whatever you think of him, theres no denying that the guy has a unique kind of wit. Unfortunately, a few years ago he gave up straight comedy to become a political talking head, and I guess someone decided to record it. The result is IAl Franken: God SpokeI, a scattered documentary following Frankens politics laced exploits from the release of his book Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them in 2003...
