| Alvin and The Chipmunks |
Alvin, Simon and Theodore have been a part of American culture for nearly half a century. Theyve covered just about every genre of popular music, from the country stylings of Garth Brooks to the top of the pop charts with songs from Madonna and Michael Jackson. Im not sure how many times the little guys have been reinvented, but the music has always been at the heart of their adventures, and this latest retelling sticks to that tradition. In this redo of the classic cartoon, Alvin and the Chipmunks doesn't embarrass itself too much. It has its fun moments, especially when those little guys sing 'Funky Town.' Source: Hollywood.com |

"Alvin and the Chipmunks" (PG, 91 minutes). The story of how the Chipmunks become rock stars and almost get burnt out on the rock circuit. Jason Lee stars as Dave Seville, who accidentally brings them home and is soon shouting Alvin! at the top of his lungs. David Cross is the rock promoter who wants them to lip-synch their concerts, and Alvin is the one with the big "A" on his red sweater. I admit I am not a fan of those squeaky little voices. If you are, it'll be like you are having a whole different experience. Rating: Two stars. Source: RogerEbert Headlines |

When you hear that the title of a movie is iAmazing Gracei its a little hard not to be at least a little dismissive. Seriously, if a movie is going to name itself after a popular 18th century Christian hymn I for one immediately become suspicious that Im in for some kind of superficial, over-the-top, spiritually exaggerated, feel-good chronicle of some song-writing ministers conversion. To my great surprise the film is far from any of those things. With its dubious title and fluffy PG rating I fully expect the movie to be generally ignored by American audiences, but it will truly be their loss. Source: Cinema Blend |

Writer and director Paul Weitz restates the obvious with a sly smile and a wink in the hopes well catch a new glimpse of how bizarre our pop culture reality has gotten. He plays a witty balancing act, sticking to the non-PC parody side of comedy without dipping too deeply into the kinds of satire that would put a lot people off. The movies bark is worse than its bite, but its more like the sound of a laughing hyena. Source: Cinema Blend |

Look! They're making fun of the president and America's obsession with reality TV--what an ingenious concept! OK, so American Dreamz tries a little too hard to be satirically witty and bitingly political. But, darn it, it still makes you laugh in spite of yourself. Source: Hollywood.com |

A satire with two targets, "American Idol" and President Bush, not in that order. Hugh grant plays the producer and star of an Idol-like TV show, and Denis Quaid is the clueless president whose Cheneyesque chief of staff (Willem Dafoe) is a puppet master. Politics and showbiz converge on the final show of the season, where the President will name the winner, and one of the finalists may be a terrorist. More slapdash than smooth, more impulsive than calculating, and the riskiest political satire since "Wag the Dog." Yes, it goes beyond the norm, exaggerates, is partisan, is unfair. That is the role of satire. Also starring Mandy Moore as an ambitious contestant from Ohio, and Marcia Gay Hardin as the first lady. Source: RogerEbert Headlines |
