Now we have the American premiere of perhaps Jean-Pierre Melville's greatest film (I have not seen them all, but I will). When "Army of Shadows" was released in 1969, it was denounced by the left-wing Parisian critics as "Gaullist," because it has a brief scene involving DeGaulle and because it involves a Resistance supporting his cause; by the late 1960s, DeGaulle was considered a reactionary relic. The movie was hardly seen at the time. This restored 35mm print, now in art theaters around the country, may be 37 years old, but it is the best foreign film of the year. Im not quite sure of Zwigoff actually likes artists, sometimes he seems bent on portraying them all as burnouts, frauds, pedophiles, and mass murderers. But whether he likes them or not, his film spreads itself all over them like a sticky jam; setting up true art as some sort of mystical, unattainable pedestal. Who cares? If youre an art student, youll probably buy the movie on DVD and rub it all over your body, but for the 99.999 of the population who knows nothing about real art, doesnt want to know anything about real art, and could care less about real art, its just another failed college movie about boring characters selling out to get sex. | Art School Confidential / *** (R) |
Max Minghella stars as an uncertain young art student whose freshman year includes a romance with a model (Sophia Myles), classes with a fierce teacher (John Malkovich), strange roommates (Ethan Suplee and Joel David Moore), a bitter alcoholic has been (Jim Broadbent) and a caf owner (Steve Buscemi) whose approval is crucial to the students. All of the art school material is perfectly-observed, funny and true, but the subplot involving a serial killer is an unnecessary distraction. Written by the graphic artist Daniel Clowes and directed by Terry Zwigoff; they also collaborated on the better "Ghost World." Source: RogerEbert Headlines |

if IArthurI is really intended only for very young kids, then you have to wonder what the heck they were thinking with the films dialogue. Character dialogue is spoken as if Luc Besson had some sort of minimum word count requirement while writing it, and so whipped out a dictionary to pad every sentence with as many extraneous and irrelevant words as possible. Except when they got on set and tried to film it, someone realized that there was way too much dialogue and rather than paring it down to something that sounded a little more realistic, they simply instructed all the actors to speak their lines really really fast.
