The laptop actually helps to figure out your room number if you are having trouble. you put the camera in the hole next to it and the remote (with new battery) into the slot w/ the brick over it...then you can take a picture of the room number across the way to help you figure out your room number. But it isn't that imperative to the game.

First game i really finished on my own! 11:34, kind of long but I'm proud of myself. :) Like Arturothe1 said, don't worry about the laptop. It has no relevance. This was actually a lot simpler than I thought it was going to be, there are not that many items that you have to pick up... even the ones that you do don't really bring any progress to the game. Just think hard, you'll figure it out. :)
