Nerd
In the Dr. Seuss book from 1950 If I Ran the Zoo, a creature named "nerd"
appears. It might also be a variation on the name of famous ventriloquist
Edgar Bergen's (Candace's Bergen's father) dummy, Mortimer Snerd. Some
suggest nerd is from surfer or hot-rodder lingo, or even that is it a
euphemism for "turd".
