Pipe Down
Pipe down or 'be quiet' could have started when pipes on ships were blown
like whistles to give the sailors signals. When a sailor was to be dismissed
below he would have been 'piped down' by an officer.

I have heard that it could also have something to do with the phrase "Nice
Pair of Pipes" Which means you have a very well singing voice. Translation:
It could have meant to keep your "pipes" (Vocal chords) Down.
