Dating back to 1830 it was used to describe the Presbyterians of Fayetteville.
One explanation is that it could be from a ruddy neck caused by anger.
Another is that may be refer to a sunburned neck caused by working outside.
Or, it refer to pellagra which causes the neck to turn red. Also, striking
coal miners may have once wore red bandanas.
