Up the Apples and Pears
Up
the apples and pears
Slang for up the stairs. Its origin is unclear however a site visitor
said it may have originated through cockney ryming slang..
The
following is a theory sent in by a site visitor:
I think the expression "up the apples and pears" (up the stairs)
might
be Cockney in origin - if I'm not mistaken, the rhyme is typical
Cockney. (There's a word for creating expressions that way, but it
eludes me.)
This
was sent in by another site visitor:
This is indeed an example of Cockney ryming slang meaning stairs. Other
examples are ‘titfer’ (tit for tat = hat), ‘boat race’
= face and ‘joanna’ = piano (say it quickly!) Rhyming slang
became popular in music halls but was originally used as a sort of code
to outwit policemen and other authorities
