The doors close. A stranger turns to you. Somewhere between the lobby and the top floor, small talk will find you. Pick the least cringe reply, floor after floor, and see how far you get.

How to play Elevator small talk

The elevator doors close and a stranger turns to you. Maybe it is someone with a dripping umbrella, a courier buried under packages, or a coworker you locked eyes with during last night's karaoke. Each floor gives you four possible replies, and exactly one of them is the least cringe. Good replies keep your cringe meter calm, kind ones even recover a point, and bad ones (finger guns, barking at dogs, saying "so, quiet in here") fill it fast. When the meter maxes out you flee to the stairs and the run ends. Survive as many floors as you can. The stranger order shuffles every ride.

About Elevator small talk

Elevator small talk is a survival game about the most compressed social situation known to humanity: two strangers, one metal box, thirty seconds. Everyone knows the panic of choosing between saying something and saying nothing, and this game bottles that feeling into a cringe meter. The building holds twenty-eight strangers, from a confident unaccompanied child to the building's self-appointed weather correspondent, and each one hands you four replies ranging from perfectly normal to career-ending. The rules of real small talk apply: kindness lands, effort backfires, and the person who says the least usually wins. Runs shuffle the stranger order and the reply positions, so memorising answers only gets you so far. How many floors can you survive before you take the stairs? Free, quick, and painfully relatable.
