How to play Guess the year

Each day you get five short clues, each naming a well known invention, gadget, film, game, mission or world moment. For every clue you pick the year it happened from four options. The four years always sit an equal number of years apart, so you never have to split hairs between two years that sit side by side. Lock in your answer and the game shows you whether you were right and how many years off you were. Score out of five, keep your daily streak alive and share a spoiler free grid when you finish. Everyone gets the same five clues each day.

Tips

• Anchor yourself with a year you do know, then count up or down
• Tech moves fast, gadgets are often more recent than they feel
• The options are spread out, so pinning down the period is usually enough
• Come back daily, the streak is the real prize

About Guess the year

Guess the year is a nostalgia trip and a memory test rolled into one. The clues span decades of culture and technology, so a few will be easy and a few will catch you out. It is the kind of daily round that sparks an argument about exactly when that thing came out.
