Kingdom Rush

What it is

Kingdom Rush is the tower defense game with the soldiers on the path, playable free in the browser on CrazyGames. Waves of orcs, trolls, wizards and worse march along a route toward your kingdom, and you build towers beside the route to stop them. This is the original 2011 browser game, run through an emulator so it still works after the plugin it needed disappeared.

How to play

Each stage is a map with a path and a set of building spots. Everything is the left mouse button: place a tower on a spot, upgrade it as you go, fire a special ability, call reinforcements when a wave leaks. There are four tower types, and each is strong against some enemies and weak against others, so one type alone will not hold. The soldier tower summons troops who stand on the path and stop enemies in place. Clear every wave and the stage is won.

What makes it different

The soldiers. Most tower defense games are about damage at range. This one adds troops who physically hold enemies on the path while the other towers work, which turns every map into a question of where to block and where to shoot. The upgrades, special skills and reinforcements are layered on top, and there are many stages.

Why it is on Bored

A tower defense game is the opposite of a two-minute break, and we list it anyway, because it is the original and it is free in a tab. Expect the portal's consent dialog and ads around the frame, and set aside more time than usual.

Tips

• Put the soldier tower where two other towers can reach the path, the troops hold and the towers do the damage
• Mix tower types on every map, each one has enemies it cannot handle
• Upgrade a few towers rather than building many cheap ones
• Use reinforcements to plug a leak, not to start a fight
