I

A massive library of indie games, many free. This is where the weird and wonderful game ideas live.

What it is

Itch.io is the marketplace for independent games: a huge catalog of games, tools, game assets, soundtracks, comics and books uploaded by their makers, many free and many playable in the browser. The homepage shows featured and fresh games as cards with tags, a one-line pitch, a price or a FREE badge, and a WEB badge for the ones that run in a tab.

How to play

Browse the sidebar: popular tags, games by price, free games, games with a demo, on sale. The Browser games tag is the one for instant play. Click a card, then the play button on the game page. No account is needed to play free browser games or to download free ones. An account lets you buy, keep a collection and upload your own. A desktop app installs and manages downloaded games if you go that far. There is a Randomizer if you cannot choose.

What makes it different

The weird lives here. The site hosts game jams, so plenty of what you find was made fast, for a theme, and it shows in the best way: odd ideas, tiny scopes, strange art, no marketing. Prices are set by makers, many games are free and sales are frequent. There are no ads and no consent dialog, only tags, featured picks and a fresh-games row that constantly updates.

Why it is on Bored

Among the giant hubs in Arcade portals, this is the one where the games are strangest. Dozens of our links to small experimental games go to pages on this site. The homepage is for the day you want something nobody has heard of yet.

Tips

  • Filter on Browser games first, most listings are downloads
  • Sort by popular within a tag, then by fresh once you have a taste for it
  • Free plus a tag is a good afternoon, the Randomizer is a good five minutes
  • Game jam pages are where the oddest things are

FAQ

Is Itch.io free?

Free to browse, with no ads and no cookie banner. Many games are free, others have a price set by the maker.

Does it work on a phone?

The site does. Whether a game does depends on the game, so check its page.

Do I need an account?

No. Browsing and playing free browser games need nothing. An account is for buying, collecting and uploading.

How many games are there?

More than anyone could browse, added to every day. The fresh-games row on the homepage never stops.
