The desktop version of the shattered screen gag, wallpaper and all. Best deployed on the owner of a brand new laptop.

What it is

Cracked Screen is a single photograph of shattered glass that fills your whole browser window. Radiating cracks, a crater near the middle, splinters catching the light, all on a black background that reads as a dead display. Close the little instruction box, press the key for full screen, walk away from the computer, and wait for the person who sits down next to make the noise.

How to play

Open the page on the device you want to prank. A small white box tells you how to go full screen, on a computer that is one key press, and then you close the box with the cross. The image now covers everything including the browser bar, so the screen looks physically broken. Leave it on the desk, or hand the phone over with a worried face and say you are so sorry. The site's own suggestion is to open it on your victim's phone and watch.

What makes it different

There is no animation, no sound and no fake error text, and that restraint is why it works. A convincing crack pattern on a black screen matches what people expect a smashed display to look like, so nobody stops to read anything. It is a single image and asks for nothing, which is exactly what you want when you have ten seconds before someone comes back.

Why it is on Bored

Prank screens is for fake crashes and real screams, and this is the simplest possible entry: one image, one key press, one reaction. It sits alongside the fake updates and virus alerts as the low-effort option that still lands.

Tips

  • Go full screen or the browser bar gives it away
  • Turn the screen brightness up so the cracks catch the light
  • Works best on someone else's phone, handed back casually
  • Have the real screen back within a minute, the joke has a short shelf life
