How to play Mystery sound

Every round shows you a sound written out, like KRRNCH... krnch... pause... krnch, plus a short description such as crunchy, hollow, followed by regret. Four possible sources are listed and only one is right. Read the sound, hear it in your head, and pick what made it. After each guess a short explanation reveals the deciding clue. Ten sounds per run, with score, streak and an ear rank at the end. No speakers required, everything happens in your imagination.

About Mystery sound

Sound effects in comics and books have always been a tiny art form. A good written sound can put a noise in your head more precisely than a recording. Mystery sound turns that trick into a guessing game. Each round serves a lovingly transcribed noise from everyday life: the tactical silence of a mosquito, the smug beep of a finished washing machine, the lonely roll of a skateboard continuing without its rider. Your job is to match the transcription to its source. It sounds easy until two options both feel right and you are whispering fwap fwap fwap to yourself in public. Ten rounds, no audio, all imagination.
