How to play String along
Twelve letters sit on pins along the four edges of a wooden board, three on each edge. Spell English words by stringing letters together, with two rules: two letters in a row can never come from the same edge, and every new word starts with the last letter of the word before it. Each word you submit stays on the board as its own coloured thread. Keep going until all twelve letters have been used at least once. A counter next to the board shows how many letters are still bare, and par is how many words our own solution uses, so it is always reachable. Really stuck? Give up ends the day and shows one way to do it. The board changes every day.
Tips
- Find a home for the awkward letters like J, Q, V or Z first, then build the rest of the chain around them
- Long words that zigzag over all four edges cover five or six letters in one go
- Think about the last letter before you submit, because it decides how your next word starts
- Endings like ING, ED and ER and starts like RE, UN and OUT are handy bridges between awkward edges
About String along
String along is a daily word chain where using fewer words beats being fast. Most people can cover all twelve letters in six or seven words. The real puzzle is a chain of two or three words that hits every pin. Because two letters in a row can never share an edge, you stop reading the letters in rows and start looking across the board, and the threads end up looking a bit like string art. A new board appears at midnight UTC, and it runs in your browser with no account.
