A digital toybox of the absurd featuring 17th-century death roulette, ultra-realistic glasses cleaning simulators, and a quest to see how British your teeth are.

What it is

VOLE.wtf is a workshop of very British, daft internet things, working, as it says, towards a dafter internet. The homepage is a corkboard of scraps, instant photos and sticky notes, each one a link to a toy: a penguin physics game, a pig-stacking game, dog poo golf with a 3D-glasses mode, a glasses-cleaning simulator, a lo-fi camera app, a font that censors itself, a daily word minigame, a clock that tells you what celebrities are doing right now, a club you can only enter at one percent battery. Dozens of them, and more arriving.

How to play

Look at the board and click whatever catches your eye. There is a plain list view in the corner if the collage is too much. Most toys take a minute to understand and a few minutes to play. Some, like the daily puzzle, are built to come back to. Nothing needs an account and nothing costs anything, though there is a gift shop and a newsletter if you want to encourage them.

What makes it different

One sensibility, applied to everything. The jokes are specific, very British and fully built: not a mockup of a seaside simulator but an actual one, not a joke about a magazine but a real type-in HTML magazine. Several of the toys are on Bored as links of their own, which tells you the hit rate. The board itself is the other joke, a mess on purpose that rewards the person who reads the small scraps.

Why it is on Bored

Several of the toys on this corkboard have entries of their own here, and this is where the rest of them live. One sensibility runs through all of it, very British and fully built, so if one toy made you laugh the odds on the next are good. A visit is a minute per scrap and as many scraps as you have time for, with a daily puzzle to bring you back.

Tips

  • Use the list view if you want to see everything at once
  • The quizzes are the quickest way in, the games are the longest stay
  • Several toys are British in-jokes, do not look them up, enjoy the confusion
  • Check the newer scraps, the board changes as toys are added

Does it end?

No. It is a collection that keeps growing, and the daily minigame gives you a reason to return.
