Building the district...
How to play Monospace 2101
Monospace 2101 is a first-person walk through a rain-soaked neon-lit future city where every wall, road, sign, pedestrian and flying car is drawn from text glyphs instead of textures. Click or tap to enter once the district has finished building. On a desktop, click the city to lock the mouse and look around, walk with WASD or the arrow keys, hold Shift to jog and press Esc to pause. On a phone, the pad on the left is a joystick that walks you around, dragging the pad on the right turns your head, and the Jog button in the middle speeds you up. The 19 letters of the rooftop sign have blown into the streets, and each one you walk over lights up another character of the sign, which you can see from most of the district. A soft chime and a brighter glow tell you a letter is within 25 metres, so the hunt never really stalls. Letters hide at street level: alley ends, under footbridges, the tips of the piers, behind noodle stalls and in phone booths. Press P or tap the Photo button to save the current view as a picture. The settings button in the header has quality, rain, head bob, neon flicker, invert look, field of view and sound. When the sign is fully lit your hunt time is saved on your device, and you can keep walking as long as you like.
Tips
- Head for the rooftop sign first, it faces the harbour and makes a handy compass for the whole district
- When the chime plays, stop and turn slowly, the letter glows brighter than any sign around it
- Check the dead ends: alley ends, pier tips and the space under footbridges are favourite hiding spots
- Jogging is fine for crossing the district, but walk once the chime starts or you will run past the letter
- Turn neon flicker off in the settings if flashing bothers you, the city stays just as bright
- Phones start on the low preset, switch quality to medium in the settings if the frame rate holds up
- Photos are saved from the current view, so find a hanging sign and a puddle before you press P
About Monospace 2101
Monospace 2101 starts from one idea: what if a city was built from characters instead of textures? Every surface you see is a grid of text glyphs, printable ASCII plus a few block and box-drawing characters, and the neon and hanging signs use traditional Chinese shop words like the ones you would see stacked over a street in Hong Kong. The look borrows from that city more than from anywhere else: composite buildings with shops at the bottom and towers on top, hanging signs sticking out over the pavement at different heights, a harbour promenade with piers, and rain on everything. The district has pedestrians walking under umbrellas, a cat, a delivery bot, flying traffic in sky lanes between the towers, ad drones, a slow blimp and animated billboards, all made of the same glyphs. Everything is rendered in the browser with three.js from a glyph atlas that is drawn at runtime with your system fonts, so there are no textures, no models and no downloaded assets at all. The sound is synthesised on the fly too: rain, a low city hum, neon buzz near the signs, the whoosh of a passing car and wet footsteps. It is a walking simulator first and a treasure hunt second. The letters give you a reason to explore every alley and pier, but nothing is timed unless you want it to be, and the city is happy to let you wander in the rain after the sign is lit.
