Bottomless

Scroll down past the Titanic, the deepest drilled hole, and eventually the sock layer. Your deepest depth sticks around for next time.

What it is

Bottomless is a shaft you scroll down. It starts honest: the shallow end of a pool, a city canal, the deepest diving pool ever built, the Channel Tunnel, the deepest free dive, the floor of the deepest lake. Every marker down to 12,262 meters, the deepest hole anyone has ever drilled, is a real figure checked against published sources. Below that the rock gives up, the facts run out, and the shaft carries on anyway into places no geologist signed off on.

How to play

Scroll down and keep going. On a phone, swipe or drag the shaft upward. On a computer use the wheel, hold the down arrow to fall steadily, or press space for one big drop. Home takes you back up. Your depth ticks in the header and your deepest ever is saved between visits. Press Surface whenever you want to stop and you get a card with how far you got. There is a bottom, and it has a punchline.

What makes it different

People are bad at depth. A hotel pool feels deep, the recreational scuba limit is only 40 meters, and the deepest drilled hole does not even reach halfway through the continental crust. Laying all of that on one vertical line makes the distances land in a way a table never does. Then the jokes start, and because the real part was so careful, the fake part is funnier for it. One extra oddity is slotted in at a fresh depth every day.

Why it is on Bored

We built it for the same reason people love scrolling down the ocean: the long vertical line is the only format that makes depth feel real. Ours goes through the ground instead of the water and refuses to stop when the facts run out. It rewards stubbornness, and that is the whole reason it exists.

Tips

  • Hold the down arrow rather than wearing out your scroll wheel
  • Everything down to 12,262 meters is real, so read those markers properly
  • Come back tomorrow, a new oddity is added at a fresh depth each day
  • Press Surface any time, your deepest is saved either way
