Pointer Pointer

Move your mouse. Get a photo of someone pointing at it. Shouldn't be this entertaining, but here we are.

What it is

Pointer Pointer is a black page with one request: please move your pointer. Stop it anywhere and a photograph fills the screen of someone pointing at exactly that spot. Move again and a different stranger from a different party points at the new one. It does this single trick and nothing else, and it is still one of the fastest laughs on the internet.

How to play

Move your mouse, hold it still, and wait a second. The photo appears. Move again and it goes back to black until you stop. Try the corners, try the very edge, try the exact middle. Every position gets a picture, and a different one each time you settle somewhere new. On a touchscreen, tap and hold a spot instead. There is nothing else on the page: no menu, no score, no buttons, and no explanation of how it knows where you are. It simply waits for you to stop moving and then finds someone who has been pointing at that exact spot all along.

What makes it different

The photos are ordinary party and holiday snapshots, not staged studio shots, which is what makes it work: real people at real gatherings, all of them apparently aware of where your cursor is. The fun is not the technology, it is the sheer number of real people who have been recruited to point at you.

Why it is on Bored

Pointless fun, hall of fame. It is the site people mean when they say the internet used to be fun, and it has not changed a bit.

Tips

  • Hold still, it needs a moment to find the right photo
  • Try the extreme corners and see who they found for those
  • Move in small steps to see how precisely it tracks your cursor
  • Send it without explanation and let the other person discover what it does

FAQ

Is Pointer Pointer free?

Yes. It is free in the browser with no account. The page loads an ad script, though there is no cookie wall.

Does it work on a phone?

Mostly. Tap and hold a spot to place the pointer. It is built around a mouse, so a computer is the better experience.

Is there a score?

No. There is no score, no timer and no end, just the pointing.

Does it save anything?

No. Nothing is stored between visits.
