What it is

Kick the Ball Back is a photograph of a sports field with a group of people standing far away, your own shoe at the bottom of the frame, and a ball rolling slowly toward you across the grass. You know what is coming, and so does everyone on the field. They are going to want it back, and you are going to have to kick it. The site calls this every unsporty person's worst nightmare, and it is right.

How to play

Wait. The ball leaves the group, crosses the field and grows in the frame as it comes, and there is nothing to do about it until it arrives. When it reaches your shoe, click, or tap, to kick. Timing is everything and there is one button, which is one more than you would like. A sound toggle sits top-right, and More Games at the bottom leads to the rest of the workshop.

What makes it different

It is a one-second sports game built entirely out of dread. Nothing about it is difficult in the mechanical sense, the difficulty is in the waiting, the eyes of four strangers at the far end of the field, and the certainty that you are being watched. The photograph does more work than a 3D engine could, because it is a real field with real people on it. Skill does not come into it. The wait does.
