The original Celeste, built in four days and still free. Dash, splat, retry until the mountain gives in.

What it is

Celeste Classic is the original mountain-climbing platformer, made in four days in 2015 for the PICO-8 fantasy console and posted to its forum, where it still runs free in the browser. It is the game that grew into a famous paid release later. Here it is the small, hard, precise version: single-screen rooms, a climber who can jump and dash, and a mountain to climb one screen at a time.

How to play

Click the play button on the cartridge and wait for the console to boot. Arrow keys move, Z or C jumps, X dashes in the direction you are holding. Each screen is a puzzle: find the route, then execute it. Die and you are back at the start of the screen. Fruit is scattered through the levels for anyone who wants the harder route. Below the player are a Code toggle, which shows the whole cartridge, and an Embed toggle.

What makes it different

It fits in a cartridge with room for almost nothing else, and the constraint shows in the best way. Every screen teaches one idea and then asks you to combine it with the last one. The controls are tight enough that a death always feels like your own. It has more than two thousand stars on the forum, which is a lot for a post from 2015, and it still boots in seconds.

Why it is on Bored

This is where it started, playable in a tab with no install. It is a proper test of a lunch break: you will not finish it in one, and it does not save, so a climb is a sitting. Plan accordingly.

Tips

  • Plan each screen as a series of landings, the dash is what gets you between them
  • Dash diagonally up for the long gaps, straight up is shorter than it looks
  • Ignore the fruit on a first climb, it is the hard mode
  • Do not read the thread comments below the player, they discuss the later levels

FAQ

Is Celeste Classic free?

Yes. It runs free in the browser on the console's forum page with no account, no ads and no cookie banner.

Does it work on a phone?

Not really. It needs arrow keys and two buttons, so a keyboard is the way to play.

Does it have sound?

Yes. The chiptune music starts on the title screen and runs through the climb.

Does it save?

No. Close the tab and the climb starts over.

Does it end?

Yes. It is a finite climb with a top.
