Trap floor

Twelve rooms that cheat. You are meant to die. Every trap you find gets marked for good, so the second run is the real one.

How to play Trap floor

Twelve small rooms, one door in each, and a floor that is actively out to get you. Move with the arrow keys or A and D, jump with space or W, and use the pad at the bottom of the screen on a phone. Nothing is signposted the first time round: a plain stone tile might hide a spike, crumble under your feet, drop you straight through or fire a dart at you. When a trap gets you, it gets marked with a red cross for good, so every death makes the room a little more readable. The rooms get nastier as you go, from a single hidden spike in the opening corridor to a floor that crumbles the moment you touch it. Deaths are the score, so the goal is to finish all twelve rooms with as few as you can manage.

About Trap floor

There is a whole genre built on breaking the promise every platformer makes, which is that the floor is the floor. Trap floor is a small, friendly version of that idea. It is unfair on purpose, but it is unfair in a way that teaches: nothing kills you twice without warning, because the game permanently marks every trap you discover. That turns dying from a punishment into the only way to make a map, and it makes the second run through a room feel completely different from the first. Twelve rooms is short enough to finish in one sitting and long enough that a clean run is genuinely worth bragging about.
