The Higher Lower Game

Does a global financial crisis get searched more than global warming? Test your cultural intuition against real-world Google search numbers.

What it is

The Higher Lower Game is a quiz with one question repeated forever: which of these two things do more people search for? A band on the left with its monthly search count showing, a plane maker on the right with its count hidden, and two buttons, higher or lower. Get it right and the right-hand card slides over to become the next comparison. Get it wrong and the run ends. That loop is the whole game.

How to play

Pick classic mode to start. Read the left card, guess whether the right one is searched for more or less often, press the button, and watch the real number roll in. Your score is your streak, and the page keeps your high score on screen. Beat the clock mode adds a timer, and there is a newer elimination mode the site is still testing. The pairs mix the obvious with the genuinely unguessable, which is where most runs die.

What makes it different

It is less a trivia game than a test of your model of other people. You do not need to know anything, you need to know what the world is curious about, and the world is curious about odd things. The site is upfront that its numbers come from a snapshot taken in 2017, so treat it as a period piece about what the internet cared about that year.

Why it is on Bored

One guess, one reveal, and a streak that ends the moment your instinct is off. The game asks you to put a number on something you could never know exactly, how many people search for a thing, and the pairs are built so your sense of scale fails in interesting places. It takes under a minute to explain and is dangerously replayable, since every run ends with a number you should have seen coming.

Tips

  • Think about how many people would type it, not how important it is
  • Everyday things get searched for far more than fame suggests, keep that in mind
  • Try beat the clock once you have a feel for the scale
  • The numbers are from 2017, so recent fame does not count
