Online Pictionary with strangers. The bad drawings are genuinely half the fun.

What it is

Skribbl.io is the draw and guess game you play with strangers. One player gets a word and draws it on a shared canvas, everyone else types guesses into the chat, and whoever guesses it gains points. A public game runs three rounds. The site itself says it plainly: a free online multiplayer drawing and guessing game, and the player with the most points at the end is crowned the winner.

How to play

Type a name or leave it blank, pick one of 28 languages, and click Play. You land in a public room mid-game within seconds, with a player list and scores on the left, the canvas in the middle, and the chat on the right. A hint bar shows the word as underscores, a timer counts down, and the drawer's name is announced. Type your guesses in the chat. When it is your turn you pick one of a few words and draw with the toolbar, which puts one color on left click and another on right click, with undo. Create Private Room is the button for friends. The site's own changelog lists what custom rooms allow: up to 20 players, one to five words to pick from, configurable hints and Normal, Hidden or Combination word modes.

What makes it different

The public room already had eight players in it before the page finished loading, so there is no waiting for friends. The drawings are terrible, the guesses are worse, and the chat moves fast enough that a wrong guess is funny. Room owners can kick, ban, mute and votekick, and there is a report button, which matters in a game with strangers.

Why it is on Bored

Zero setup is the argument. Click once and you are in a public room guessing at someone's attempt at a giraffe, with a timer running and a chat moving fast enough that a wrong guess is funny. Three rounds and the game is over, so a visit fits a break. It also works as the warm-up before a private game with friends, because everyone already knows how it goes.

Tips

  • Guess early and often, the chat is for throwing words at the canvas
  • The hint bar shows the word length as underscores, and rooms can be set to reveal letters
  • When drawing, draw the shape first and the details never
  • Pick the language before you join, the selector sits next to the name field
  • Use a private room for friends, the public chat is strangers
