Pour point
How to play Pour point
A vessel stands on the counter with a thin line marked on it and a spout above it. Press and hold anywhere to pour and let go to stop. You get one press per pour, and the liquid keeps landing for a moment after you let go, so the trick is to stop a little early. Once the surface has settled, the game measures how close it came to the line. Dead on is a bullseye worth 100. A little under still scores, less the further you are from the line. Over the line spills down the side and scores nothing. Every pour has its own feel. Treacle is slow to start and slow to stop, bubbly froths up and settles lower than it looked, the bath tap keeps running for a second after you turn it off and the swimming pool, seen from above, takes a long pour and a steady nerve. Later pours add a twist: a wobbling counter, a leak that only gets plugged after you stop, a vessel standing crooked or a lid that hides the last bit of the level, so you pour by ear. The daily ten are the same for everyone and add up to a score out of 1,000. Endless keeps pouring until your third spill.
Tips
- Narrow parts of a vessel fill fast and wide parts fill slowly, so a wine glass rises quickly at first and a fish bowl speeds up again near the top
- In the measuring jug only the number counts: 250 ml on the dot is a bullseye
- Bubbly is judged on the drink, not the froth. Keep going until the foam is well above the line
- The note of the vessel rises as it fills. Before a pour with a lid you hear the note of the line, and two waves on the counter show the same thing with the sound off
- With a leak, keep pouring a little past the line. The plug goes in just after the last drop lands
- Everyone gets the same ten on the same day, and the share line shows your total and one symbol per pour without giving the vessels away
About Pour point
Pour point is a one touch timing toy about pouring exactly enough. Every vessel and liquid is drawn in code in a calm flat style made for this game, and the level rises the way it would in the real shape: the game works out the volume of each vessel slice by slice, so a narrow neck races and a wide belly crawls. All the sound is synthesised on the spot. The note you hear while pouring is real physics too. The air above the surface rings like the inside of a bottle, and as the liquid rises that column of air gets shorter and its note climbs, which is how you can hear a glass getting full without looking. The name borrows a term from the oil industry, where the pour point is the coldest temperature at which an oil will still flow. There is no account and nothing to download, and your daily pours stay on your own device.
